Christianity in Africa. Actual configuration Christianity has reached Africa at a short time after the events related to the death and ressurection of our Savior. As a result of Saint Mark the Apostle`s spreading of the word of God we have today the Coptic and the Ethiopian Churches with their unique elements adapted to the culture and mentality of the people. Thus, it can be said that Christianity has constituted itself in Africa as well an indigenous part, being strongly rooted into the history of the continent.
After a brilliant evolution from the times of the first centuries African Christianity has encountered two great tests: firstly, it was the separation between the Coptic Orthodox, the Ethiopians and others, following the fourth Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon, and secondly the rule of Islam, beginning with the VIIth century. Thus, although it was called the Patriarchy of the entire Africa, the Patrarchy of Alexandria could not, due to these events, bring a remarcable contribution to their mission of christening Africa. That is why, the spreading of the orthodox belief among the indigenous africans remains a phenomenon that can be reported only from the beginning of the XXth century. The representatives of the Orthodox churches in Africa have started to travel to Europe and America in order to get in touch with the Orthodox churches there in order to get their support. Unfortunately, there have been mistakes too into the process that began with the XXth century, and one of the biggest that has to be mentioned was that the great Christian missions have ignored the local cultures in the middle of which they have sheltered. The missionaries have rejected from the start everything that was linked to the African heritage, which was considered worthless and diabolic and that happened because not everybody accepted the inculturation with their arms open.
