Orthodox Hermeneutics as Theological Development within the Tradition

The term postmodernity is generic and expresses
the identity crisis which triggered a paradigm change in traditional
thought and ethics, and in which the “knowledge condition” is characterized
by the disappearance of philosophical “grand narratives” (“grand récits”)
which legitimated other intellectual discourses as well.
In postmodernity, we witness “a return of the religious”; religion is crucial
to the emergence of the public sphere and in the organization of the tolerant
civil society, but it plays no role in defining personal identity. In fact, the development
of identity is an act of contradictory delimitation, hierarchization of
differences and distances.
