As an editorial essay, I offer here an inventory and a summary evaluation of the events and publications that illustrate the concerns for bioethics within the Romanian Orthodox theology during the post-communist period, followed by a presentation of the various stuff of this monographic issue.

The secular culture has radically deflated the significance of living and dying. It has evacuated end-of-life care of any ultimate meaning. Once dying is no longer understood as a door to judgment before God, its seriousness is radically discounted. Within the constraints of secular culture, one can no longer appreciate the approach of death as the last opportunity to orient oneself wholeheartedly in repentance and right worship to the God with Whom one should want to spend eternity. The secular culture attempts to place all of the energies directed to the care of the dying solidly within the horizon of the finite and the immanent. Moral concerns are reduced to issues of free and informed consent, maintenance of the autonomy of the dying person, the pursuit of the patient’s understanding of death with dignity, and the provision of those medical interventions that can control pain and suppress self-consciousness (thus making repentance impossible) and even shorten and take life. Religious concerns are reduced either to matters of morality or to a cultural, not transcendent, force. Once one loses sight of the transcendent significance of death, the significance of death is immanentized, and dying is trivialized. This state of affairs is the result of a foundational shift in the roots and commitments of Western culture.

This article presents the two versions of secular bioethics, one of American origin, the other European, both successors of Western Christian morals, who compete and concur to occupy, at the expense of a vision inspired by Orthodox Christianity, normative positions in the field of ethical assessments of health care in a newly reintegrated country in Western European political space such as Romania. Using as a case study health care at the end-of-life, the common mentality of the two secular variants is emphasized, namely the absence of any genuine reference to the transcendent and, in its absence, the centering of decisions on the self and the social equality in self-affirmation. On the contrary, a Christian-Orthodox bioethics has in its center the relationship with God and the submission to His will, according to which the good end of life is one in which repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation with God and fellow humans are the ethical priority.

The initiation or continuation of treatment under a negative medical prognosis is one of the most difficult moral situations in the context of health care. The article presents first of all the multiple aspects of identifying and defining a threshold beyond which medical care is no longer justified. Secondly, there are some reasons why this very problem exists. They draw our attention on the technical performances of contemporary medicine, the massive economic investments and high social expectations of these performances. In this climate, the Christian-Orthodox vision of being can hint to a superior value to mere survival.

Technological advances in the field of medicine offer amaizing new possibilities in the nowadays society. To avoid their use without discernment, society needs a proper moral guidance. She expects especially from the Church a clear position on these conquests of the medical science. The Church expresses its position through public documents, which seek to help in choosing an ethical decision. The analysis of the bioethics documents of the Romanian Orthodox Church and those of the Evangelical Churches in Germany, according to certain criteria, draws attention to the differences and convergences that exist in the statements of these Churches, and opens a dialogue toward a common voice of the Churches in the field of medical ethics.

The latest researches in biology and medicine affect dramatically the already acute debate on the moment of the beginning of human life. This debate in turn provides serious implications forming the attitude towards a cluster of Bioethical issues such as an abortion, contraception, human embryo experiments, assisted reproductive technologies, stem cells, gene editing and gene therapy. The paper investigates that the solution of those problems is directly linked with the definition of beginning of human life in embryo development. In secular science there is no consent in such a definition, because the concept ‘human’ is not only the biological or medical notion. To define it we need to use other fields of knowledge to analyze embryological data. In the paper we offer the Christian foundation for such definition. From the Christian perspective, the moment when a human comes into existence is the fusion of the sperm and the egg. We dare to believe that the arguments presented in the paper allow admitting such a perspective as the best possible bioethical consensus, not only from Christian, but also from generally human point of view.

The recourse to assisted procreation technologies is a growing phenomenon, including within Christian-Orthodox communities, but its moral and pastoral issues are still rather poorly evaluated. A special aspect of the in vitro fertilization procedures (IVF), that will be discussed here, is the loss that accompanies not the refusal to have children, but, paradoxically at first glance, the desire to have them. In this essay, I will examine this situation both logically and theologically. I will begin with a moral typology of abortions in the case of natural procreation, then I will present the procreative losses in the IVF context. Further, I will compare the two types of losses, aiming at identifying common and specific aspects. Although the human status of the unborn is a fundamental issue in the moral evaluation of procreative loss, the IVF context highlights the role that the parental project plays in the attitudes and decisions concerning the fate of those conceived.

The present paper deals with the origins of the belief in the „evil eye” and the connected practices. The ”evil eye” belief is a world-wide phenomenon with personal, social, and moral implications that has spanned the centuries and encircled the globe. We`ll find it today still operating in Romanian villages where the eldmothers defend the newborns, the children and the stock with red rope, garlic and incantations. So, why such an ancient superstition is alive today and what is the official position of the Christian Church? In order to respond, we have divided our research in three main parts, with emphasis on the terminological and theological analysis. The results show the following: ancient Sumer is likely the origin of the belief; for Greeks and Romans, „evil eye” is the destructive power of an angry glance, connected with the emotion of envy. The possesors could be: „evil-eyeing demons”, the gods and the humans. Christian figures like John Chrysostomos, Basil, Jerome or Tertullian suggest that the devil and his demons use men`s envious eyes in order to accomplish their evil purposes.

Im Jahr 2007 verabschiedete Montenegro eine neue Verfassung, welche bei Art. 14, die Trennung der Religionsgemeinschaften vom Staat regelt und festlegt, dass sie bei der Durchführung von religiösen Riten und Angelegenheiten, gleich und frei sind. Art. 46 der Verfassung regelt das Recht auf Religionsfreiheit, auf eine Art die nicht vollständig mit Art. 9 der Europäischen Konvention zum Schutz der Menschenrechte und Grundfreiheiten, im Einklang steht. Montenegro ist eine der ehemaligen Republiken Jugoslawiens, wo das Gesetz über den Rechtsstatus von Religionsgemeinschaften, von 1977, aus der kommunistischen Periode noch in Kraft und anachronistisch ist.
Jetzt gibt es ein großes Streben, ein neues, mit den jetzigen Standards in Übereinstimmung stehendes Gesetz über religiöse Bekenntnisgemeinschaften in Kraft zu setzen.

The homily De pace (CPG 4214) is one of the severian sermons with an undeniable authenticity that gives us an insight of his conflict with John Chrysostom. The homily was composed on occasion of their reconciliation’s celebration and it’s a reply to Chrysostom's speech on the previous day. Severian skilfully constructs this text by subtly highlighting the shortcomings of John's pastoration. He also emphasizes that the peace of the community does not have its origin so much in the authority of the bishop who claims it – as Chrysostom did in his De recipiendo Severiano homily – but in the grace of Christ who offers it.

Noile descoperiri și impresionantele realizări ale societății contemporane din domeniul științelor biomedicale au iscat provocări și probleme inedite, au ridicat întrebări care cer cu insistență răspunsuri și au generat nevoia unei călăuziri specifice și a unei mai profunde înțelegeri a valorilor existente.
Noile informații științifice și tehnologice aduc atingere misterului vieții și sfințeniei persoanei umane și afectează relațiile interpersonale. Astfel, ele influențează din ce în ce mai mult viața credincioșilor care simt nevoia de călăuzire și sprijin din partea Bisericii. În același timp, reprezentanții societății, corpurile legislative, grupurile parlamentare, precum și lumea medicală cer stăruitor un cuvânt ecleziastic temeinic justificat.
Comisia de Bioetică a Bisericii Greciei, după ce a examinat atent și amănunțit problemele bioetice relevante din perspectivă teologică și medicală, a emis un document privitor la reproducerea asistată ce cuprinde 82 de articole, care a fost aprobat de Sfântul Sinod al Bisericii Greciei în octombrie 2005.
Acest document analizează în detaliu problema reproducerii asistate. Scopul său nu este acela de a îngrădi libertatea credincioşilor în limitele unor anume linii directoare, ci, mai degrabă, de a contribui la înțelegerea profundă și amănunțită a diverselor probleme iscate de reproducerea asistată, care îi va conduce la o mai matură şi responsabilă luare de decizii. Mai mult, deși documentul a primit aprobarea Sfântului Sinod, el nu reprezintă o circulară și nu a fost oficial distribuit clerului și credincioșilor. Nu este un text cu o autoritate ecleziastică de necontestat, ci, din contră, publicarea sa este menită a iniția dezbaterea în problematica reproducerii asistate. Însă noi considerăm că acesta face dovada acurateței realității științifice și clinice și respectă principiile fundamentale ale antropologiei creștine. Textul este clar, oferă oamenilor călăuzire, prezintă persoana umană ca chip al lui Dumnezeu și constituie o mărturie a etosului creștin-ortodox.

Următorul document a fost adoptat în cadrul ședinței Sfântului Sinod al Bisericii Ortodoxe Ruse din data de 25-26 decembrie 2013 (jurnal nr. 158).
În prezent, tehnologia biomedicală reproductivă care a primit numele de „maternitate surogat” a cunoscut o crescândă răspândire. Dar, deși unele țări o îngăduite prin lege, aceasta continuă să provoace în societate dezbateri aprinse. În documentul „Fundamentele concepției sociale a Bisericii Ortodoxe Ruse”, adoptat de Sinodul Episcopal Jubiliar în anul 2000, s-a luat act de acest fenomen. Cu toate acestea, o întreagă serie de probleme ce vizează atitudinea pastorală privitoare la consecințele „maternității surogat” continuă să genereze controverse. Prezentul document al Bisericii Ortodoxe Ruse oferă călăuzire ecleziastico-practică referitoare la botezul copiilor născuți cu ajutorul unei „mame surogat” (nota redacţiei ruse).

Doctorul Pavel Chirilă nu are nevoie de prezentare nici în mediul teologic. Ultima sa carte, alcătuită împreună cu o colaboratoare apropiată, este o culegere de materiale despre o realitate inconfortabilă, însă nu chiar suprinzătoare, ţinând cont de failibilitatea general umană: multitudinea de situaţii în care primul principiu etic al profesiunii medicale formulat în celebrul „jurământ al lui Hipocrate”, anume primum non nocere/mai întâi a nu vătăma (folosit ca subtitlu al cărţii), este încălcat.

La Universitatea de Medicină şi Farmacie „Gr. T. Despre buna întrebuinţare spirituală a obişnuitului. Recomandările şi aprecierile teologilor Teodor Baconschi, Nicolae Turcan şi Mihai Neamţu invită şi mai mult la lectură, dar în acelaşi timp creează aşteptări ce se cer confirmate.

Lucrarea lui Gallagher și Meade (numiți abreviat în continuare – G și M) prezintă și comentează un număr de 21 de liste ale canonului biblic datând din primele cinci secole creștine. Suplimentar sunt prezentate și 2 „liste” de origine iudaică (Iosif Flaviu și Talmudul babilonian). Prin listă canonică G și M înțeleg „o listă a cărților biblice pe care un sinod sau un autor (antic) le consideră a fi canonul biblic”. G și M sunt conștienți de redundanța conținută în această definiție, întrucât termenii „canon” și „listă” sunt sinonimi pentru mulți cercetători („Introducere”, p. xiii).

Admirativ constat că preocupările de restituire a valorilor teologice româneşti sunt încă vii. În atâtea domenii prezenţa românească este în poziţii de frunte. Cei ce le ocupă au tot dreptul să fie şi învăţători. Experienţa, în nenumărate ocazii, asigură atât continuitate benefică, cât şi finalitate rodnică în instituţia numită „şcoala vieţii”. Subtitlul cărţii devoalează parte din esenţa ei: rolul, rostul şi folosul sfaturilor pastorale. Părintele Gheorghe Maior (1892-1970) şi-a asumat o misiune şi prin promisiunile ce le-a onorat. Prin ceea ce scrie s-a ţinut de cuvânt. Nu epatează. Renunţa din start la termeni pompoşi (chiar dacă ar avea suficientă „acoperire” să-i utilizeze) şi conferă forţă expunerilor prin originalitate şi, mai ales, simplitate. „Pentru un conducător duhovnicesc e întru totul necesar să ştie să se orienteze în slujba de păstor bun al turmei sale cuvântătoare, care sufletul său şi-l pune pentru oi şi al cărui glas are să fie cunoscut de turmă şi urmat. Să-l înveţe a păstori, voiesc aceste sfaturi ale mele”. Pentru început grija sa de sfătuitor este orientată spre religie tratată din punct de vedere practic. Teme ca religia şi sufletul omenesc, religia în viaţa practică, Biserică, organ de permanentizare a religie, ortodoxia şi sufletul românesc continuă cuvântul lămuritor de la început, dar deschid şi o perspectivă de interes pentru cititor. „V-am pus în mână busola cu forţele ei magnetice.
